"Gardens of Versailles" chess set

This chess set includes a board with 64 squares. The white squares are solid-coloured; the black squares are decorated with a rosette. The 32 pieces are entirely hand-made and hand-painted. The whole set is in reconstituted alabaster powder. Each piece was finished individually by hand. The whole set fits into a wooden box featuring the Château de Versailles official logo, with two inside compartments for carefully storing each piece and the chessboard.

Each piece is a miniature version of a statue or item on the grounds of Versailles: three of them the 'Heroic Poem' statue (the king), 'Queen of Europe' statue (the queen) and 'Bacchus' statue (the bishop) ' stand in the gardens' north flowerbed, . the knight is a horse in the 'Apollo's Bath' grove, . the rook is based on Marlborough Tower in the Queen's Hamlet in the Trianon Garden, the pawn is a small-scale copy of the 'Fleurs de Lis' vase in the Royal Avenue.
