Mobilier national 1964-2004 - 40 years of furniture design

The remit of the Atelier de Recherche et de Création, in the words of Jean Coural, is to contribute to 'promoting French contemporary style in the framework of state commissions.' The initial intention was twofold: both to favour the renewal of the art of French furniture and to stimulate French industry in this sector. Designers quickly recognised the benefits of this public sponsorship which offered them the possibility of working free from the constraints of the commercial sector.

These commissions have produced a collection of unique or limited-edition pieces whose execution testifies to a search for excellence in line with the tradition and resources of the Mobilier national and whose spirit reflects the nature of the needs expressed by the state commission, destined above all to furnish the most prestigious interiors of the Republic's official buildings.
